Hjörleifshöfði Cape

Distance from Hrifunes Guesthouse by car: 30 minutes

Hjörleifshöfði Cape stands alone in the black sand desert of Mýrdalssandur. The bleak beauty of this setting has provided the backdrop for a number of adverts, fashion shoots and films, including Russell Crowe's Noah. In Icelandic history it is known as the "Home of Hjörleifur," one of the first Viking settlers, who arrived here from Norway in the 9th century. Until 1936 the cape was still inhabited by self-sufficient farmers. Here you can observe the birdlife, mainly consisting of fulmars who live in the cliffs. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, as there are areas of loose sand.
