Distance from Hrifunes Guesthouse by car: 2 hours
Langisjór Lake is one of the most remote in Iceland. The lake is 20 km long and 2 km wide and is surrounded by hyaloclastite mountains on each side. These mountains were formed during the Ice Age, through an eruption that took place beneath the ice cap, and they are unique to Iceland. Sitting at one end of Langisjór Lake is the mighty Vatnajökull glacier. The lake has recently become part of Vatnajökull National Park.
As there are no roads around the lake, the best way to explore the area is to take in the view from a nearby hill, or from the top of Mount Sveinstindur. You'll experience dramatic views across the surrounding landscape, including black volcanic sand, rivers and moss covered mountains.
